Kappa Couple as Wayside Gods
from lake Megamiko 女神湖, Akanuma 赤沼
Nagano

A pond

Once upon a time

Suiko juni-hin no zu
Illustrated Guide to 12 Types of Kappa

The letter K can be pronouced G in some regions or combinations:
kappa - gappa / kawa - gawa - river / kame - game - turtle / ko - go - child

..............................................................................................................................................

- quote
The name is a combination of the word kawa (river) and wappo, an inflection of warabe (child).
A hairy kappa is called a Hyōsube
There are more than eighty other names associated with the kappa in different regions...
... The kappa is typically depicted as roughly humanoid in form and about the size of a child. Its scaly reptilian skin ranges in color from green to yellow or blue.
... webbed hands and feet to live in the water ...
... Although their appearance varies from region to region, the most consistent features are a carapace, a beak for a mouth, and a plate (sara), a flat hairless region on the top of the head that is always wet, and is regarded as the source of the kappa's power. This cavity must be full whenever a kappa is away from the water; if it ever dries out, the kappa loses its power and may even die.
Another notable feature in some stories is that the arms are said to be connected to each other through the torso and can slide from one side to the other.
While they are primarily water creatures, they do on occasion venture on to land. When they do, the plate can be covered with a metal cap for protection. In fact, in some versions of the legends, kappa spend spring and summer in the water, and the rest of the year in the mountains as Yama-no-Kami (山の神, “mountain deities”).
Although they are reported to live throughout Japan, they are often said to be particular to Saga Prefecture.
... Kappa are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers or trickster figures. Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women's kimonos, to the malevolent, such as drowning people and animals, kidnapping children, and raping women.

- Politeness -
It was believed that, if one was confronted with a kappa, there were a few means of escape. Kappa are obsessed with politeness, so if a person makes a deep bow, it return the gesture, the water in the plate on its head spills out and it is rendered unable to leave the bowing position until the plate is refilled with water from the river in which it lives. If a person refills it, the kappa will serve that person for all eternity.

... Kappa are not entirely antagonistic to human beings. They are curious about human civilization, and they can understand and speak Japanese. They may even befriend human beings in exchange for gifts or offerings of nasu (茄子, Japanese eggplant), soba (そば or 蕎麦, buckwheat noodles), nattō (なっとう or 納豆, fermented soybeans), or kabocha (カボチャ, 南瓜, winter squash), but especially cucumbers, the only food kappa are known to enjoy more than human children.
Japanese parents sometimes write the names of their children, or their own names, on cucumbers and toss them into waters believed to be infested with kappa in order to mollify the creatures and allow the family to bathe.
In some regions, it was customary to eat cucumbers before swimming as protection, but in others it was believed that this act would guarantee an attack.

Japanese Tales - Royall Tyler
The kappa, a water goblin that has become almost the emblem of Japanese folklore,
is not to be found in medieval tale literature at all.
Above all, farmers and their preoccupations, so basic to the modern folktale, are rare in the older literature.
Although they do include popular elements, the medieval collections are not folk literature.

Gifu

The One-Armed Kappa
Long, long ago, a kappa lived in the river. This kappa would threaten children who were swimming in the river, pull the tails of horses walking along the river banks and drag them into the water, and generally cause mischief to those around him.
The river this kappa lived in was in a mountain in the province of Hida (modern day Gifu prefecture), and all the villagers were troubled by its presence.

A local Kappa (gawairo ガワイロ) changes into a hoozuki 鬼燈 / 鬼灯 Hozuki lampion flower. If people pick up the plant, they will become sick and die.

Gawairo is a local Yokai, changing into a child and challenging people to Sumo wrestling. In his plate on the head is poison which sometimes makes the water all sticky so that people drown. Then he sucks out the idoko イドコ(肛門) anus.

Once an old woman was grilling imomochi 芋餅 mochi from potatoes every day for her food. One day a local Kappa (Gaaranbe ガーランベ) who had observed her for a while, tried to steal some. The old woman had secretly added some hot stones inside the mochi and the Kappa, when trying to eat them, burned his mouth badly and fled, never to come back.

Once
there lived a ガーランベ Kappa in the pond アマ池 Amaike in 広瀬村 Hirose village along the river 馬瀬川 Basegawa. Sometimes he changed his from into a Buddhist priest and tried to get some キビ団子 millet dumplings, but in the evening he always went back to his pond.

Once

in 馬瀬村 Base village there was a young woman, who came to the local sake shop every day to buy rice wine. The owner thought this was quite strange and followed the woman. She walked all the way to the riverpool and then suddenly disappeared.

- quote -
There is a restaurant called "Kappa club" in my hometown 紀北町 Kihoku-cho, Mie Pref..
When a boy is born in the house of the fisherman in my hometown, manners and customs to have they go with Minato-ya of Honmachi on 11th for New Year holidays and take the cup of parent and child and exchange it stay even now.
Nagashima-ura was in the middle of crossing the 赤羽川 Akaba river on the back of his white horse, when the tail of his horse was caught by Kankarakoboshi (Kappa).
When Jirozaemon slashed with his sword, they left the right arm which kankarakoboshi (kappa) screamed, and was catching a tail and escaped in a river.
Because Kankarakoboshi appeared in the evening of the third day after Jirouzaemon took the arm home with, he got his arm back and made a promise to be able to never let the person of the whole families of this house die in the sea and a river.
Thereafter the people of the Minato family didn't seem to encounter drowning in the sea or a river.

When a boy is born in a family of the village which just runs fishery after it for nearly 400 years, they go to the Minato's for New Year holidays and in them for the first time, and a custom to exchange the cup of sake making the vow of parent and child.
Thus the Kappa will also protect them.

An itinerant merchant from Kyushu once stayed over night at a place sacred to 荒神様 Aragami Sama.
That night the 箒神 Hokigami deity passed by on his way to supervise a birth and asked Aragami to come with him, but he refused.
So Hokigami went alone. When he came back he said, the baby was well and healthy, but it has only a short lifespan, and would soon be taken away by an Enko (Kappa).
The merchant had heard all of this and felt sorry for the child as if it was his own. He told it all to the family of the baby.
On the day his death was forecast, the child wanted to go go the river and Grandma took him there. In fact, this Grandma was the Enko.
When both of them were about to jump into the river, the father came with his gun and shot. The Enko could flee, but at least the child was safe.

- quote
COMBAT and SUMO
The chief delight of the mischievous Kappa is to challenge humans to single combat. Indeed, the Kappa delights in Japanese sumo wrestling, and often challenges its victim to a sumo bout. Writes scholar Michael Dylan Foster: :
“In one legend involving sumo, some children are playing by the water when a child with whom they are unacquainted appears and challenges them to sumo. Observing this child closely, they realize it is actually a kappa, and that there is water in the sara on its head. Accordingly, they shake their own heads; the kappa imitates them, spilling the water. Bereft of all strength, it is forced to leave.
This love of the sport of sumo can be found throughout much kappa lore. One common method for defeating the kappa when challenged to sumo, or any other confrontation, is simply to bow politely. The kappa, though mischievous, is essentially a polite creature who defers to human ritual; it will bow in response, spilling its water, and thus losing its power.”

Shirafuji Genta watching Kappa practising Sumo

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi

- quote
Kappa are usually seen as mischievous troublemakers or trickster figures.
Their pranks range from the relatively innocent, such as loudly passing gas or looking up women's kimonos, to the malevolent, such as drowning people and animals, kidnapping children, and raping women.
Another method of defeat involves shogi or sumo wrestling: a kappa sometimes challenges a human being to wrestle or engage in other tests of skill. This tendency is easily used to encourage the kappa to spill the water from its sara.
