Once upon a time
in the forest of a small village there was a little old swamp. In it lived a lone Kappa who often played bad tricks on the villagers.
One day a traveling priest came to the village, went to see the swamp and asked the Kappa why he would do such bad tricks. The Kappa said he was really distressed to be born as such a creature and just had to run around like wild and be bad.
When the priest heard this, he began to lecture the Kappa:
"As long as you are alive,
you should try to do something for the benefit of the humans, for the benefit of this village!"
and then the priest left.
Time went on and summer came. The sun kept shining day after day and the villagers in their distress during this drought began to think about some rain ritual to be performed.
Just then the Kappa appeared and volunteered to do the rain ritual.
The villagers were not quite happy with his proposal, but since there was no-one else they asked him to do it. The ritual continued for many days and the Kappa was not allowed to eat or drink during this time of prayers.
After a few days the sky became dark and thunder began to roll over the village. And indeed, great drops of rain began to fall, faster and faster. The rain became stronger and stronger, almost like a waterfall down from the sky.
And the Kappa, amid all that rain, died in peace.
At the end of summer the priest visited the village again and now heard the story of the Kappa calling for rain. He told the villagers of the Kappa and his wish to be reborn as a human, so the villagers made a grave for the Kappa by the swamp and put up a large memorial stone for him.
This story is kept alive in the village to our day.
