It is also called the todomeki.

- - - - - Mythology
Dodomeki were first described by the 18th century Japanese scholar Toriyama Sekien.
The long arms of a dodomeki reflects the Japanese belief that a person with long arms has a tendency to steal. The bird eyes that grows on the dodomeki's arm are a reference to the Japanese dōsen, a copper coin with a hole in the middle of it that's commonly known as the chōmoku (Birds eye).

Conflict with Fujiwara no Hidesato
During the Heian period, a kuge (court bureaucrat) named Fujiwara no Hidesato had just defeated the rebel Taira no Masakado and been promoted as the kokushi regent of the Shimotsuke province for his victory. One day while hunting in his newly acquired territory, Hidesato encountered an old man who warned him about a yōkai who had been terrorizing a nearby horse graveyard at night. Hidesato went to the horse graveyard to investigate and waited until sundown for the yōkai to appear. Once the yŏkai arrived, it revealed itself to be a dodomeki that stood over ten foot tall and had arms covered with hundreds of glowing eyes. Hidesato drew his bow and shot an arrow at the brightest glowing eye, causing the dodomeki to flee and collapse near Mount Myōjin. When Hidesato later pursued the yōkai, the dodomeki emitted a burst of flame from its body and a fume of poisonous gas from its mouth. Outmatched, Hidesato fled from the scene and returned the next day to find the ground heavily burnt, but no sign of the dodomeki.
Meeting Priest Chitoku
Nearly 400 years later during the Muromachi period, a priest named 智徳 Chitoku was called to investigate a series of unexplained fires that broke out at the temple in a village near Mount Myōjin. He started to notice a woman covered with a robe near the temple whenever he held his sermons and discovered that she was the same dodomeki that Hidesato had fought 400 years earlier. She had come back to suck up her remaining toxic fumes and blood that she lost during her last battle with Hidesato.
The temple was built on top of the battle site, so the dodomeki caused a series of fires to scare all the priests away. However, after consistently overhearing Chitoku preaching whenever she walked by the temple, the dodomeki became enlightened and vowed to never commit any more evil deeds for the rest of her life.

大曽(宇都宮市大曽)を通りかかった藤原秀郷(ふじわらのひでさと)のもとにふしぎな老人が現われ「大曽村の北西にある兎田という馬捨場[3]にゆけ」と告げたので向かったところ、十丈はあろうかという大きさで、百の目をもつ刃のような髪の鬼が姿を見せたので、弓を射って退治したとされる。矢を受けて去った百目鬼は明神山で倒れたが毒気と炎を放ちつづけ、本願寺(宇都宮市塙田)の智徳(ちとく)という僧の法力によって成仏をするまで人々を困らせていたという。
ーーー 百穴の百目鬼
長岡の百穴には昔、百匹の鬼を従えた鬼が棲んでいたが「鬼のような世界からは出たい」と発願。本願寺(宇都宮市塙田)に通って仏門に帰依した結果、人間に生まれ変わることが出来た。百匹の鬼の頭目だったことに由来して「百目鬼」という地名がついたとされる[1][4]。本願寺に人間になった百目鬼が感謝のしるしとして置いていった親指の爪と水晶の数珠が残されているという[4]。

夕顔の実を利用した鬼のお面(かんぴょう面)が郷土玩具としてつくられており、これは百目鬼にちなんでつくられたものとされている。

In Yokohama and Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, the Chiba Prefecture, and Tokyo etc., they would visit people's homes on the 8th day of the 12th month and the 8th day of the 2nd month on the lunisolar calendar, and they are said to borrow sieves and human's eyes. They are said to visit people's home together with a hitotsume-kozō.。

In order to avoid a mikaribaba, one would leave a basket or zaru at the entrance of the home, and it is said to be effective to put the tip of a rod into the bamboo basket and make it stand on the ridge of the house's roof. It is said that this is in order to make the one-eyed mikaribaba make it seem like as if there were plenty of eyes (stitches).

At the Ura no Yato, Toriyama town, Kōhoku-ku, Yokohama, an avaricious mikaribaba would even come to collect grains of rice that have fallen on the ground, and would cause fires due to the fire in its mouth. In order to avoid this, there is the custom of making a dango called the ツヂョー団子 "tsujoo dango" made from the rice left over from the garden, and put it in the doorway, as a means of saying that there is no more rice to collect.

On the 8th day of the 12th month and the 8th day of the 2nd month on the lunisolar calendar, there is a folk practice called Kotoyōka, and in the past, there were many regions where people would not do any work and confine themselves in their homes.
In the southern part of Chiba Prefecture, on the 26th day of the 11th month of the lunisolar calendar, as a period of about 10 days of seclusion in the home called "mikawari" or "mikari," when it would be taboo to go outside at night or enter the mountains and spend the time in the home quickly avoiding any big noise, lights, hairdressing, or entering bath.
Outside of the Kantō region, at Nishinomiya Shrine in the Hyōgo Prefecture and Kito, Tokushima Prefecture (now Naka), there is a practice of confinement to the house before the festival called "mikari." Rituals like these of secluding oneself in the home have been interpreted as seclusion at home due the appearance of a monster, and it is thought that those monsters are the mikaribaba and the hitotsume-kozō.
It is also said that "mikari" comes from "mikawari" (身変わり), indicating a time different from usual when one observes the practice of confinement at home.

From the first to the fourth sub-district in Yokohama, 神奈川区 Kanagawa district.
Every year on the fourth day of the 12th lunar month, the Yokai ミカリバアサン Mikari Basan comes out.
On this day all things that are usually hung out to dry, like crops or straw sandals, must be brought inside. People prepare offerings of rice dumplings, ツジョウダンゴ tsujoo dango (オッパキダンゴ Oppaki dango and place them at the doorstep.

On the eighth day of the second lunar month, the Yakubyogami is called
me hitotsu kozo 目一つ小僧 young monk with one eye (the same as Hitotsume kozo).
People put up a rod or pole with a basket, as described above. They also leave a bucket with water where rice had been washed in.
When Mehitotsu Kozo tries to drink the water and sees his face reflected, with just one eye, he will be surprized and run away.

Mikari Basan comes on the first day of the 12th lunar month. She comes with flames in her mouth, picks up any rice grains and makes dumplings so that there will be no fire.
Hitotsume no Ba 一つ目の婆 The old hag with one eye does not like baskets with many openings (eyes). She can fly all the way to Hakone, but might hit the mountains and fall into the see. So she avoids the Western direction.
Until the 8th day, she writes all the names of ill people in her choomen 帳面 business ledger and brings it to the deity of the fields, サイノ神 Sai no Kami.
This ledger is burned in the ritual fires of サイト焼 Saitoyaki on the 14th day. But she comes back on the 8th day of the 2nd lunar month.
On the 8th day, she passes above the roof, so people put up a basket on a pole.

She has only one eye and comes on the 8th day of the second and 12th lunar month in some suburbs.

The first day of the 12th lunar month is called hanayogore no tsuitachi ハナヨゴレの朔日 in some suburbs.
Mikari Basan comes on this day.

When Mikare Basan was on her way to 佐江戸 Saedo (in Yokohama 横浜市都筑区), she came to the river 恩田川 Ondagawa and fell under the bridge 落合橋 Ochiaibashi.
Since then she never went to Saedo again.

... According to Sekien, long ago, a government minister named Karu no Daijin was sent on a mission to Tang China. This was a period of great movement of culture and ideas between China and Japan, so nothing is strange about that. However, when the envoy failed to return to Japan long after they were overdue, the minister’s son, Hitsu no Saishō, began to worry.

Hitsu no Saishō traveled to China to search for his missing father. He traveled far and wide, and in one particular location he came across something he had never seen before: a tōdaiki — a candlestick fashioned out of a living human being! By some combination of strange drugs and sorcery, the man’s ability to speak had been removed. His body was covered in tattoos, and a large candle had been placed in his head. He had been installed on a fancy little stand like a piece of furniture.

As Hitsu no Saishō looked in puzzlement at the strange sight, the human candlestick began to shed tears. Unable to speak, the man bit into he tip of his finger until it began to bleed. He scrawled out a few characters in his own blood. Upon reading them, Hitsu no Saishō realized in horror: the tōdaiki was his own father who he had come to China to search for!



The people involved in this story are real.
Hitsu no Saishō was the nickname of Fujiwara no Arikuni, a Heian period noble who lived from 943-1011 CE. Although the story about the tōdaiki is a fabrication, it’s an interesting example of where fact and folklore intersect. Because this early urban legend involved real people who were well known to educated readers, it gives the story much more weight.

The Demon Festival has been carried on since around 940 in the Heian period (794-1192)
and was designated a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 1980.
On the festival eve (Feb.10), it's started with Iwato-no-mai dance.
The heros and heroines of this day are boys and girls.
The main event of this festival is called "Aka-oni to Tengu no Karakai /rivalry between Aka-oni (Red Demon) and Tengu (long-nosed goblin)".
(literal meaning of karakai is raillery, but it's totally rivalry)
The story performed by the red demon and Tengu has come from Japanese mythology.
A destructive god ( Susanoo-no-mikoto = red demon) appeared in Takamagahara (lit. "high heavenly plain", where gods live) and destroyed the granaries.
A god of martial arts (Sarutahiko-no-mikoto = Tengu) fought to chasten and straighten him out.
Then all the gods felt happy and danced kagura.
People innovated dengaku performances, which soaked up this story, to a Shinto ritual festival, and to pray for a rich harvest and prosperity.
Aka-oni walks zigzag (Zigzag walking symbolizes lightning. Lightning is caused by Oni on a cloud by the Japanese folk tales)

During the climax of this festival,
Red Demon repeatedly provokes battle with Tengu, but is defeated.
He escapes from the shrine yard and runs around the town scattering tankiri-ame (candies made from grain powders) and white grain powder over the visitors to drive out the evil.
Kuro-oni (Black Devil = Ame-no-koyame-no-mikoto of the mythology) fills the role of judge.
It is said that if you are showered with this powder or eat tankiri-ame, you will not get ill during the summer.
Lots of visitors are excited to get tankiri-ame and a powder shower.

Te 修正会 Shusho-E ritual in the night of the fifth day of the New Year.
Demons who live on the sea off Takezaki and the demon masks which are kept prisoner in a box (onibako 鬼箱) in the Kannon Hall try to get out on the fifth day of the New Year and call out to each other to overthrow the island. To prevent this, the villagers have to shout even louder to protect their island - the orabigoe おらび声 heavenly voice.
The villagers are only clad in a fundoshi ふんどし loincloth, so this is a famous hadaka matsuri 裸祭 naked vestival.


If someone opens this Onibako, hes eyes will get sick soon or he will get a high fever. So nobody ever dared to open this box.

竹崎観音堂で毎年陰暦の1月5日の夜から6日にかけてお粉荒れる鬼祭りで用いられるダイショウボウ(樫の生木の棒)は、夜道に杖として使うと俗耳には聞えないダイショウ、ダイショウ、という叫びによってオサキなどの妖魔を退散させる。この棒を取ったものは一年中降伏にみまわれる。

。竹崎地区の未婚の未婚の若者男子は「鬼之忌屋」という若者宿に入り、既婚男子は宿老宿に入る。若者組からは4名の鬼副(オンゼイ)が選ばれる。追儺の行法の鬼追い、童子舞などに特色がある。

Emori えもり瀬兵衛 (せへえ) Emori Seei
Emori was able to buy something special. He got a tooth from a person living in 八丈島 Hachiojima, where the original inhabitants were said to be Oni.
The tooth was about 3 cm long and 6 cm wide.

When a child looses an upper tooth, it has to throw it under the veranda and chant
nezumi no ha to tokkaero 鼠の歯ととっかえろ Change this into the tooth of a mouse.
When it looses a lower tooth, it has to throw in on the roof and chant
oni no ha to tokkaero 鬼の歯ととっかえろ Change this into the tooth of an Oni.
Thus the new tooth will grow strong and healthy.

Sutten Doji 酒顛童子 / スッテンドウジ Shuten Doji
Shuten Doji was beheaded by Minamoto Yorimitsu and his head flew up into the sky. Then it came down and landed on the helmet of Yorimitsu. With his strong teeth of an Oni it started to bite off the layers of the helmet and almost succeeded, leaving just one layer before it was chased away.

The boss of the native 蝦夷 Emishi group was called 赤頭 Akagashira. - alias Aterui アテルイ / 悪路王 Akuro-O / Acro-O 阿弖流爲 (? - 802)

Tamuramaro built a grave for Akagashira and offered a statue of Kannon Bosatsu to appease his soul. This is now at the temple 竜福山・長谷寺 Hasedera.

In former times there were no street lights and it was difficult to see the faces of people when you walked at nightfall. Still not yet the time for a lantern to find your way. So when people met, they would exchange a greeting:
Taso kare wa? 誰そ、彼は (dare daroo, are wa?) "Who is this?". Taso kare ... became tasogare in the course of time, now loaded with the feeling of loneliness and melancholy.

Ōmagatoki - referring to the moment at dusk when the sky grows dark. Opposite of akatsuki (暁) dawn.
It has specific meanings for the two ways of writing it:
first, 逢魔時 "the time of meeting yōkai, yūrei, and dark creatures"; and
second, 大禍時 "the time of great calamity".

In Illustrated One Hundred Demons from the Present and the Past, Toriyama Sekien described ōmagatoki as the time when chimimōryō, the evil spirits of the mountains and rivers, attempt to materialize in the world.



Chimimōryō, chimi mooryoo 魑魅魍魎 Chimi Moryo
is a term, originated from China dating roughly 2,500 years in ancient chronicles such as the Zuo Zhuan, referring to monsters of the mountains and monsters of the rivers. It refers to various kinds of obake and things changed into yōkai.
"chimi" (魑魅) refers to the monsters of the mountains, and
"mōryō" (魍魎) refers to the monsters of the river,
and so the word "chimimōryō" is often used to refer to all monsters of the mountains and rivers. Furthermore, the word "minori" was also used for this. For this to be used to mean a "ripening" (minoru) oni has been used in various regions since ancient times.

..... a 魅 is a swamp or marsh god taking on a shape with the head of a beast, and it is surmised that from this, what the word was seen to mean expanded to encompass beasts of various attributes.
- - - - - Chimi are said to be monsters that come about from strange atmosphere (miasma) in mountains and forests. Taking on an appearance with the face of a human, and the body of a beast, they would perplex humans. In the dictionary Wamyō Ruijushō from the Heian period, they were considered to be a type of oni under the Japanese name 魑魅 / "sudama", and in the Edo period encyclopedia, the Wakan Sansai Zue, they were seen to be mountain gods (Yama-no-Kami).
- - - - - Mōryō were considered to be spirits from mountains and rivers, and trees and rocks. They would come forth from the life energy of mountains, water, trees, rocks, and all kinds of things in nature, and fool humans. Additionally, they are also said to eat the dead, have the appearance of a child, stand on 2 feet, have dark red skin, have red eyes, long ears, beautiful hair, and a voice that resembles that of a human. With this kind of appearance, they are thought to be oni. In the Wakan Sansai Zue, they are considered water gods (Suijin), and in the ancient Chinese book Zuo Zhuan, they are considered to be gods of swamps and marshes.
